Find your flange size
THE NIGHT OWL · FITTING GUIDE

Find your flange fit

The right flange fit matters for comfort and milk output. Start with your nipple measurement, not your bra size.

Why is it important to measure?

The correct breast shield or flange size helps you pump comfortably and make the most of your sessions. An incorrect size can cause discomfort, pain or reduced milk output.

Nipple diameter is the key measurement. Our standard 24 mm size fits many mums, but measure before ordering in case you need a different shield size or a flange insert.

Our pumps are designed for breasts of different sizes. Wear a supportive bra to hold your pump firmly against your breast, and use the correct flange size for your nipple.

How to measure

Measure here Areola Nipple only · in mm
Measure the diameter at the base.
Leave the areola out.
  1. Get ready to measure
    Already had your baby?

Measure before a pumping or feeding session. Gently stimulate your nipple so it perks up. This helps replicate its size while pumping. Then follow step 2.

    Buying while expecting?

To have your pump ready when you need it, we recommend buying the standard 24 mm size now.

Measure around 2–3 weeks before your due date. If you need inserts, you can order the appropriate size from our website.

When you are ready to measure, gently stimulate your nipple so it perks up. This helps replicate its size when you start pumping after your baby arrives. Then follow step 2.

Your size can change, so measure again when you start pumping.

  2. Measure the nipple only Using a ruler, measure the nipple diameter at its base, where it meets the areola, as shown in the diagram. Exclude the areola, the surrounding area. Measure in millimetres: 1 cm = 10 mm.
  3. Measure both sides Your left and right nipples can be different sizes, so measure each separately. Nipple size can change during pregnancy and postpartum. Remeasure around 8–12 weeks postpartum, and whenever your fit or comfort changes.

What size do I need?

Find your measurement below. These recommendations already allow room for your nipple to move within the flange tunnel; you do not need to add extra millimetres to the suggested size.

Important: measurements are a starting point.

Do not rely on the size you used with another pump. Flange sizes can vary significantly between brands and designs.

Finding your fit can involve trial and adjustment. Just because you are expressing milk does not mean your flange size is ideal; comfort, nipple movement and other factors matter too.

Shields and inserts: which do I need?

Night Owl pumps come with either 24 mm or 27 mm shields. Check the product listing for the size and parts included.

For smaller sizes, we offer 13, 15, 17, 19 and 21 mm flange inserts.

Inserts are compatible with the 24 mm shield only. They do not fit the 27 mm shield.

How should the fit feel?

Your nipple should move freely within the tunnel, without rubbing or drawing in too much areola. If pumping is uncomfortable, check your fit and settings.

Wear a supportive bra to keep your pump firmly in place. Recheck your measurements if your fit changes, and ask our team if you need help choosing.

Keep this little life saver on your fridge! Us mums have enough to think about, let our magnet make things easier for you. Make sure you never let a drop of your liquid gold go to waste by having the right information about temps and time frames.

This would also make the perfect addition to a baby shower gift or for a Mumma to be!

Please Note - Magnets ordered on their own will be shipped via untracked post if standard shipping is selected at checkout.

How do I clean my breast pump parts?

Breast pump parts don’t require sterilisation, as they only come into contact with breast milk, which is already sterile. Frequent sterilisation can cause parts to deteriorate, discolour, and even warp if exposed to heat over 100°C, leading to more frequent replacements.

Unless you've been specifically advised otherwise, we recommend cleaning with warm soapy water and a soft cloth or sponge. Be sure all parts are fully dry before use.

We strongly recommend avoiding drying cycles in sterilisation units, dishwashers, or other high-heat drying methods. These cycles can expose your pump parts to excessive heat, which may cause warping, hardening, or a loss of flexibility in silicone components. Over time, this can affect suction, comfort, and overall pump performance, leading to the need for more frequent replacements.

For best results, allow parts to air-dry on a clean towel or drying rack. If needed, gently pat dry with a lint-free cloth to remove excess moisture before use.

For more ways to care for your pump parts and maximise their lifespan, check out our tips below.

How regularly should I replace my breast pump parts?

Here are our recommended time frames for upgrading each part.

Please keep in mind, these are general guidelines, not strict rules or guarantees.

The lifespan of the parts will ultimately depend on factors like usage, care, cleaning methods, the efficiency of cleaning, storage, and heat exposure.

Original Night Owl & Baby Owl:

  • Shield: 2-3 months
  • Valve: 1-2 months
  • Diaphragm: 1-2 months
  • Flange inserts: 1-2 months
  • Linker: 2-3 months

Mumma Owl:

  • Valve: Approximately 1.5 - 2.5 months, or as needed if it shows signs of wear.
  • All other parts: Approximately 2-3 months, or as needed if they show signs of wear.

What will help my breast pump parts last longer?

Here are some tips to help maximise the life of your breast pump parts:

Check parts: Regularly check parts for signs of wear and replace them as needed to keep everything running smoothly.

Use gentle cleaning methods: Opt for mild detergents and avoid scrubbing too hard. A soft sponge or cloth works well, avoid bottle brushes to prevent any tears or fraying. Do not use a dishwasher.

Clean after each use: Ensure parts are cleaned thoroughly after every use to prevent milk residue build-up and bacteria build-up that weakens materials over time.

Ensure thorough but gentle cleaning: Clean parts thoroughly after each use to avoid milk residue build-up, which can affect their performance over time.

If sterilising, be gentle: When sterilising, avoid extreme high-heat methods like microwaving or boiling for long periods, as these can cause warping. If possible, use warm water or sterilising solutions to keep parts in good condition.

Store properly: Keep parts in a dry, cool area, away from direct sunlight or damp environments to prevent accelerating wear and tear.

Handle with care: Be gentle when assembling or disassembling parts to avoid unnecessary strain, which can lead to damage over time.

Sterilise thoughtfully: If you choose to sterilise the parts, limit frequent sterilisation if possible to help parts last longer.

Avoid harsh chemicals: Stick to baby-safe cleaning products to protect the materials from breaking down.

Limit soaking time: Avoid leaving parts soaking in water or cleaning solutions, to prevent weakening.

By following these tips, you'll help ensure your pump parts stay in better shape for longer!

Why do I need to replace my breast pump parts?

Can I put my breast pump parts in a dishwasher?

No. Most dishwashers operate at over 100° which can be harmful to your parts. This may cause them to discolour, warp or deteriorate and require replacing faster.

We recommend simply warm soapy water with a soft cloth or brush.
